COSEWIC
& Endangered Species Listing
COSEWIC
This is the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in
Canada - the organization responsible for reviewing and determining
species and populations to be listed as endangered in Canada
Facts:
- In 2001 the inner Bay of Fundy
salmon were declared endangered by COSEWIC
- These are important populations,
as they are distinct and different from any others in the world
- These are the first salmon runs
to be listed endangered in Canada
- Results of Listing
- No special funding automatically
goes with listing - but it does bring to bear special conservation
provisions, and brings together restoration efforts and with
it extra funding for research and restoration
- Listing by COSEWIC has galvanized
action
- Listing brought forward the
need to develop a restoration strategy and river restoration
plans
-
- POINT OF COMPARISON BETWEEN INNER BAY OF FUNDY SALMON AND
U.S. WILD SALMON
- The United States has also declared
8 Maine salmon river populations endangered under their Federal
Endangered Species Act. This is a first in that country, but
those salmon populations migrate offshore, and have a different
array of problems, including acid rain impacts in freshwater
as well as mortality in the open North Atlantic Ocean. Salmon
populations declared endangered are the Dennys, East Machias,
Machias, Narraguagus, Pleasant, Cove Brook, Ducktrap and Sheepscot
