ST. JOHN’S – The Atlantic Salmon Federation has completed a review of the 2,500 page environmental impact statement (EIS) submitted by Grieg Seafood for its Placentia Bay salmon aquaculture project and strongly recommends that reviewers declare the document deficient on the grounds that it fails to meet the basic terms of the EIS guidelines.
“Grieg hasn’t conducted the basic research that was required,” said ASF President Bill Taylor. “The company has relied on secondary information which has already been declared insufficient by government staff and the provincial Supreme Court.”
Informal comments submitted to the committee reviewing the Grieg project, ASF argues that in addition to a lack of study, the EIS contains unjustified and unreasonable conclusions. Grieg was allotted three years to complete the review and used two months and 10 days.

“Grieg’s submission is missing the information needed for reviewers to evaluate the project,” said Steve Sutton, ASF’s Director of Community Engagement. “In each case there are reasonable ways that fit well within the EIS timeframe to gather the information.”
ASF recommends that the provincial review panel, which includes members from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, return the EIS to the company for further work. This environmental assessment was ordered as a result of significant public concern over the serious risk of lasting environmental damage. Grieg’s submission does not satisfy outstanding questions about the Placentia Bay project.
