Reporter/Editor - Employment Opportunity at ASF

The Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) is hiring a full-time reporter/editor to help tell stories about wild salmon and wild rivers. The successful candidate will make creative contributions to all ASF media while helping shape communication campaigns and strategy.

The organization:
ASF is on a mission to conserve and protect wild Atlantic salmon and their environment. Founded in 1948, our 34 employees are active throughout eastern North America. Our main activities include scientific research, habitat restoration, and evidence-based advocacy.

As an international charity fighting for conservation and environmental causes, effective communication is key to achieving ASF's strategic goals. We share news about our activities through traditional media, social media, and our quarterly magazine, The Atlantic Salmon Journal.

ASF’s communication team also executes special projects and campaigns while providing support to colleagues engaged in government relations, fundraising, regional programs, and research.

The position:
The reporter/editor will report to the Executive Director of Communications and will help tell the story of ASF by providing regular multimedia features and updates for ASF.CA and the Atlantic Salmon Journal. The incumbent will assume responsibility for ASF’s social media and will contribute to correspondence and media relations activities. Editing the work of others will be a regular task.

Essential qualifications:
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications and attributes:
  • A university degree.
  • Experience in journalism or communications.
  • Demonstrated writing and editing skills.
  • Experience with photography and/or videography.
  • A strong sense of teamwork, prioritization and meeting deadlines.
  • A willingness to learn the basics of magazine production and advertising sales.
  • An ability to travel and work independently.

Additional skills:
The following attributes will be considered strong assets for the applicant:
  • The ability to write and speak French.
  • Knowledge of newsroom operations in Eastern Canada and New England.
  • An understanding of wild Atlantic salmon, including biological and social aspects.
  • A passion for the outdoors and a sense of adventure.

Living and working in St. Andrews, New Brunswick

The reporter/editor position will be based at ASF headquarters just outside St. Andrews, N.B., although we are open to discussions about remote work for the right candidate. 

St. Andrews is an internationally recognized hub for marine science, a draw for tourists from around the world, and a welcoming place for people and families. In a single day you can kayak remote rocky coves, bike the local trail network, and take in live music at the newly constructed community amphitheatre.

In St. Andrews, 'bumper to bumper' means seeing another car on the horizon as your music guides you to the beautiful ASF offices.
