A science festival is hosting a pop-up event in Bangor to get Mainers interested in preservation of salmon.

The Maine Science Festival is hosting the event on Feb. 28 at the Maine Discovery Museum.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the event is a partnership between the agency, the festival and the museum. It’s taking place during the world International Year of the Salmon initiative.

Organizers said the Bangor pop-up will be a gallery event featuring artist Karen Talbot’s “Maine’s River Run Fish” exhibit. There will also be a presentation about the history of salmon in Maine.

The federal government recently outlined a new plan to restore populations of Atlantic salmon in the eastern United States. The Atlantic salmon’s only remaining wild populations in the U.S. are in Maine rivers.
