Job Ad – Assistant Controller (full time)

The Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) is an international conservation organization founded in 1948 to conserve and restore wild Atlantic salmon and their ecosystems. ASF is headquartered in St. Andrews, NB, Canada and maintains offices in Brunswick Maine, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada. Through ASF’s membership and affiliated volunteer network, the organization represents more than 25,000 individuals who share ASF’s commitment to wild rivers and wild salmon.

 

Overview

The Assistant Controller will work closely with the Controller to provide a variety of financial functions related to the accurate collection, recording, analysis and presentation of financial information in a primarily digital and multi-currency environment, for two distinct legal corporations in Canada and US.

 

Responsibilities and Duties

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

Accounting

  • Preparing various journal entries as required
  • Deposits – verifying and posting
  • All aspects of accounts payable
  • All aspects of accounts receivable
  • Assisting with payroll and benefits
  • Multiple monthly bank reconciliations and investment reconciliations

Reporting

  • Preparing monthly departmental reports for the CFO
  • Preparing quarterly financial statements for both companies in respective currencies and provide supporting documentation as required to assist the CFO for presentations.
  • Reporting for quarterly and annual IRS and CRA filings
  • Assisting in budget preparation and FIS input for reporting purposes

Audits

  • Be one of the point persons for auditors during annual audits for both corporations
  • Prepare year end adjustments, reconciliations and lead sheets of all statement of financial position categories, including cash and investments, capital and depreciation, temporarily restricted funds, subledgers for accounts receivable, pledges receivable and accounts payable. Prepare draft financial statements and accompanying notes for audits of both companies and provide supporting documentation as necessary.

 

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

This position requires strong decision-making and problem-solving skills, with exceptional attention to detail. The ideal candidate will have clear, concise and professional written and verbal communication skills along with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build both internal and external relationships. MS Office skills are required.  Experience in Blackbaud Financial Edge – GL, AP, AR & Grants modules would be considered an asset.

This position can be based in either St. Andrews or Fredericton, however will be required to travel to St Andrews routinely. A reliable personal vehicle is required. The ability to work both independently and with a team is essential.

 

Education and Experience:

An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

  • Education: A Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting or equivalent.
  • Experience: Experience with financial reporting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, fund accounting, and reconciliation, all preferably in a not-for-profit sector.

 

Compensation: ASF offers a competitive salary and benefits package including RRSP, vacation, sick leave, and health/dental coverage.  The salary range for the position is $58,000 – 79,000 and determined based on education and experience of the successful candidate.
