DFO Announces National Strategy for Wild Atlantic Salmon

March 13, 2025

Today, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) launched Restore, Maintain, Thrive: Canada’s national strategy to ensure the future of Wild Atlantic salmon. This long-awaited announcement marks a significant milestone in the effort to protect and restore wild Atlantic salmon populations across the country.

ASF has been at the forefront of advocating for this strategy since it was first promised in 2019. Over the years, we have held meetings with key officials and politicians to share our perspective, and rallied the salmon conservation community, generating 650 letters of support.

“This strategy is a critical step forward and ASF is committed to working with DFO over the life of this strategy to make sure it is a success for wild Atlantic salmon.” states ASF’s President and CEO, Louie Porta. “Today’s announcement will be one of the last acts of the current Canadian government, with an election expected in the coming days or weeks. This strategy is a critical step forward, and we will continue advocating for greater investment in wild Atlantic salmon conservation.”

ASF has advocated consistently for a $400 CAD million strategy. Todays, announcement includes $1 million of new money and news of $6.8 million in previously funded projects. Supporting the launch of the strategy with this level of investment is an important first step toward serious recovery.

Our work doesn’t stop here. ASF will continue pushing for the funding and action needed to ensure that this strategy leads to real change for wild Atlantic salmon.
