Funding Canada’s Atlantic salmon strategy provides hope, opportunity
Prime Minister announces $81.7 million over five years, triggering $25 million commitment from ASF
FREDERICTON, N.B. – Canada’s National Strategy to Ensure the Future of Atlantic Salmon was given life this week when Prime Minister Mark Carney announced $81.7 million over five years, part of his government’s Force of Nature plan for the environment.
It’s the largest investment in wild Atlantic salmon conservation in Canadian history, which ASF will match with $25 million raised from individuals and foundations. ASF will contribute these funds through spending on programs and projects that support the strategy’s goals.
“Together, this represents a public-private investment of over $100 million for one of Canada’s iconic species, wild Atlantic salmon”, said Nathan Wilbur, President of ASF.
The National Strategy to Ensure the Future of Atlantic Salmon was launched last March, following four years of development. The process engaged thousands of people in Eastern Canada – including representatives from Indigenous organizations, regional salmon councils, and scores of individuals who made submissions and wrote letters of support.
The strategy recognizes the need for Indigenous leadership, prioritizing areas, and involving everyone who cares about wild salmon and wild rivers.
“We’re grateful that the Prime Minister, DFO Minister Joanne Thompson, and MPs from throughout Eastern Canada recognize the importance of Atlantic salmon,” said Wilbur. “They’re a keystone species that is central to the cultural fabric and local economies in the region.”
Many ASF programs like Wild Salmon Watersheds and Headwaters are already closely aligned with the strategy, and ASF’s work to support the establishment of new protected areas also contributes to Canada’s 30x30 conservation commitment.
ASF’s goal is to restore the number of returning wild Atlantic salmon to North American rivers from approximately 400,000 to one million.
