The Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) is an international conservation organization founded in 1948 to conserve and restore wild Atlantic salmon and their ecosystems. ASF is headquartered in St. Andrews, NB, Canada and maintains offices in Fredericton and Halifax, Canada, as well as in Brunswick, Maine, (USA). Through ASF’s membership and affiliated volunteer network, the organization represents more than 25,000 individuals who share ASF’s commitment to wild rivers and wild salmon.
Overview
Reporting to the VP of Finance, the IT Specialist will be responsible for overseeing and managing the organization’s information technology strategy and infrastructure. This includes ensuring that all systems are secure, reliable, and effective in supporting organizational operations. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of IT systems and platforms, alongside the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical staff. They will advocate for technology solutions that securely enhance our programs and services while ensuring compliance with relevant regulations. With a focus on cost-effectiveness and efficiency, this role will be pivotal in deploying and maintaining hardware, software, and networks that support our mission.
Responsibilities and Duties
- System and Network Management: Install, configure, and maintain computer systems, servers, and networks. Manage user accounts, access controls, and permissions. Monitor performance and implement upgrades or patches to ensure reliability. Monitor and maintain network, wi-fi, and internet services at office locations.
- Technical Support: Respond to hardware and software issues, assist employees both on-site and remotely with troubleshooting, and provide guidance on using IT systems effectively. Set up, configure, and maintain laptops and mobile devices. Support remote access tools, VPNs, and endpoint security.
- Software and Application Management: Coordinate with service providers and software vendors. Test and maintain software applications. Manage internal applications as needed.
- Data and Security Management: Ensure data integrity and security by implementing firewalls, encryption, and backup systems. Conduct regular system audits and disaster recovery planning. Oversee backups, data protection, and cybersecurity best practices.
- Inventory Management: Assist with tracking IT assets, including hardware and software licenses, laptops, monitors, etc. Develop and maintain IT documentation and policies.
- Collaboration and Training: Work with other departments to implement IT solutions, provide training, and support staff in using technology efficiently and securely. Support technology onboarding and offboarding for staff. Provide input to management as needed and requested.
- Support AI Adoption: Assess needs, pilot innovative solutions that enhance efficiency, and ensure ethical and responsible use.
Competencies, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The IT Specialist brings a strong working knowledge of modern information technology systems, including networks, servers, cloud platforms, cybersecurity practices, and business applications. They understand best practices for system reliability, data protection, and regulatory compliance, and stay current with emerging technologies, including responsible and ethical uses of AI, that can enhance organizational efficiency and service delivery. This role requires the ability to assess technical needs, evaluate solutions, and advocate for secure, cost‑effective technology choices.
Success in this role depends on demonstrated skills in troubleshooting hardware, software, and network issues; supporting users both on‑site and remotely; and managing IT assets, vendors, and documentation. Strong problem‑solving, analytical thinking, and attention to detail are essential, along with the ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to non‑technical staff. The IT Specialist works collaboratively across departments, provides training and guidance to users, and balances independent work with a responsive, service‑oriented approach.
Education and Experience
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or college diploma with certifications such as CompTIA A+, Microsoft 365 Fundamentals (MS-900), Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900), CompTIA Network+, ITIL Foundation, CompTIA Security+. A mix of education and experience can be considered.
- Experience: 3-5 years of experience in IT support or systems administration or a similar role.
- Technical Skills: Computer literacy, coding/programming, application development, network management, database management, cybersecurity knowledge, troubleshooting across hardware, software, and cloud platforms.
- Soft Skills: Problem-solving, analytical thinking, communication, detail oriented
Compensation
ASF offers a competitive salary and benefits package including RRSP, vacation, sick leave, and health/dental coverage. The salary range for the position is $64,000 – 96,000, placement within the band is determined based on the education and experience of the successful candidate.
